A three-sport star at the University of Michigan, Ron Kramer was the Green Bay Packers’ number one draft choice in 1957. Kramer’s 6’3″, 240-pound size, combined with his speed and athleticism, revolutionized the tight end position.

Hindered by injuries and military service in 1958 and ’59, Kramer became a major factor in the Packers offense from 1960-64. He caught 170 passes for 2,594 yards during that time. He scored two touchdowns in the Packers’ 37-0 1961 NFL championship victory over the New York Giants.

After he had decimated the 1961 Minnesota Vikings’ secondary, coach Norm Van Brocklin asked Vince Lombardi if he was going to bring the ‘big oaf’ with him to the next game. The nickname ‘Oaf’ stayed with Kramer.

Kramer caught 15 touchdowns over seven seasons with the Packers and played three more seasons for the Detroit Lions.
