Phil Bengtson will always be remembered as the defensive architect of the Lombardi-era Green Bay Packers champions from 1959-67, Bengtson later had a 20-21-1 record as Packers coach from 1969-71. He served in a dual role as Packers head coach and general manager in ‘69 and ‘70.
An assistant coach with the San Francisco 49ers from 1951-58, Bengtson was the first assistant hired by Vince Lombardi in 1959. Bengtson went on to coach the New England Patriots in 1972 after serving a season as a San Diego Chargers assistant in 1971.
Bengtson was an All American tackle for Bernie Bierman’s University of Minnesota Golden Gophers in 1934.
