When Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi assembled his first coaching staff in 1959, he named John ‘Red’ Cochran his offensive backfield coach. From that first season under Lombardi, through the 1966 season, Red helped develop the skills of a Hall of Fame backfield which included Jim Taylor, Paul Hornung and Bart Starr.

After serving in a similar capacity in St. Louis with the Cardinals and in San Diego with the Chargers, he returned to Green Bay, again as offensive backfield coach, under Dan Devine in 1971, where he worked closely with the successful rushing combination of John Brockington and MacArthur Lane. In 1975 Cochran was added to the Packers scouting staff where he served the Packers organization for a total of 42 years.
