Appleton, Wis., native Swede Johnston tried out for the Green Bay Packers in 1931, but failed to make the team.
The 5’10”, 192-pound Johnston played for the St. Louis Gunners of the NFL in 1932 and ‘33, then played in one game for the Packers in ‘34.
The Gunners reclaimed the former Marquette University star and he played the rest of the ‘34 season with them. When the Gunners folded after the 1934 season, Johnston rejoined the Packers.
Johnston rushed for 309 yards and scored two touchdowns with the Packers from 1934 through ‘37. He was a valuable member of the ‘36 NFL champions.
