Packers Legend Paul Hornung Reinstated After Suspension
March 16, 1964 – Paul Hornung, a key player on the Packers championships teams of 1961 and 1962, is reinstated nearly a year after commissioner Pete Rozelle suspended him (April 17, 1963) indefinitely for gambling. With the ‘Golden Boy’ out in 1963, the Packers (11-2-1) finished second to the Bears (11-1-2) in the Western Conference standings and failed in their bid to be the first team to win three straight championships in the playoff era. “If Paul can return and play with the same verve as before, I’m sure he’ll help the Packers,” Packers coach Vince Lombardi says. “Naturally, I’m real happy that he is coming back.”
