March 20, 1986 – Head coach Forrest Gregg and his staff volunteer to take random tests for illegal drugs. Their offer comes a day after the NFL Players Association announces an anti-drug proposal that provides for suspension of a player for at least a year after the player tests positive for the third time. The proposal calls for random testing only after a first offense. “My coaching staff and I would go along with a random drug screen,” Gregg says. “We have nothing to hide. We want people to know not everybody in professional football is a drug addict.”
