Packers Bettis and Nix Join the Armed Forces
March 1, 1956 – The Packers lose two players to the Armed Services although one is expected back in time for the 1956 season. Linebacker Tom Bettis, the Packers’ No. 1 draft choice in 1955, is ordered to report to Fort Eustis, Virginia under the Army reserve program for six months of active duty. Defensive back Doyle Nix, the team’s 18th round draft choice, will spend two years with the Air Force. Bettis and Nix each played in 12 games as rookies in 1955.
