Vince Lombardi Released From His Packers Contract

Feb. 5, 1969 – The Green Bay Packers executive committee and the team’s board of directors meet in closed session and unanimously agree to release Vince Lombardi from his contract with the team. The move opens the door for a return to coaching for the legend who will join the Washington Redskins as coach, general manager and part owner. Packers president Dominic Olejniczak said there was no discussion of a replacement for Lombardi at the time of the meeting. “The first thing we will do is sit down and talk to Vince when he returns from Washington. I’m confident that he will help us in any capacity during his last two week here.”
