Vince Lombardi’s Dad Chastising His Son for Leaving Green Bay
Feb. 4, 1968 – Vince Lombardi attends the Dapper Dan Dinner in Pittsburgh and talks about his father who apparently can’t fathom why his son resigned as coach of the Green Bay Packers after winning a second Super Bowl. “For what have you give up coaching,” Lombardi says his 83-year-old father asked him when he announced his resignation. The younger Lombardi pointed out that the two jobs – head coach and general manager – had become too much for one man, but is not sure he explained himself well. “Dad wanted me to stay on forever as coach of the Packers. He thinks that coaching the Packers is the greatest position going, and I agree with him.”
