Vince Lombardi Arrives in Green Bay

Feb. 2, 1959 – Vince Lombardi and his wife, Marie, arrive in Green Bay as the former Giants assistant signs a five-year contract to become the Packers head coach and general manager. Lombardi is greeted at Austin Straubel Airport by Packers President Dominic Olejniczak, two executive committee members and the media. “I’m in the process of forming a coaching staff,” Lombardi says. “At the end of next week, I should be pretty well set.” The New York native adds: “I want one man in charge of the offense and another for defense. I’ll have my finger in the whole pie.”
