Green Bay Packers Consider Joe Paterno for Coaching Vacancy
Jan. 13, 1971 – Arizona State coach Frank Kush removes himself from the list of candidates being considered to replace Phil Bengtson as coach of the Green Bay Packers. Kush, who guided the Sun Devils to an 11-0 season and a 48-26 victory over North Carolina in the Peach Bowl, is one of at least three names to have surfaced to potentially succeed Bengtson who resigned two days after the Packers finished the 1970 season with a 6-8 record. Others who met with Packers officials to discuss the head coach vacancy include Penn State’s Joe Paterno and Dan Devine of the University of Missouri.
