Green Bay Packers Fullback Fred Cone Quits to Coach
Jan. 5, 1956 – Fullback Fred Cone, the NFL’s leading field goal kicker in 1955, quits the Packers and is named backfield coach for University Military School in Mobile, Ala. “We were aware Cone was looking for a coaching job when the season ended,” says Packers general manager Verne Lewellen. “He certainly will be a hard man to replace.” By August, Cone reconsiders and returns to play two more seasons in Green Bay.
