Mike Holmgren Victorious in Final Regular-Season Game as Packers Coach
Dec. 27, 1998 – In his final regular-season game as coach of the Packers, Mike Holmgren and his team earn a record 10th straight victory over Chicago slipping past their arch rivals 16-13 at Lambeau Field. Ryan Longwell’s 18-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter is the difference. “This helped a lot of our younger players with the intensity this game had going into the fourth quarter, and (the likelihood that) the last one with the ball wins,” defensive tackle Santana Dotson says. Not until safety LeRoy Butler forces and recovers a fumble while sacking quarterback Steve Stenstrom with 54 seconds left can the Packers relax. Green Bay wins despite not having tight ends Mark Chmura and Tyrone Davis, receiver Robert Brooks, defensive end Vonnie Holliday or cornerback Craig Newsome in uniform.
