Like a Surgeon: Lynn Dickey Dissects the Saints
Dec. 13, 1981 –Lynn Dickey takes apart the Saints’ secondary with laser-like precision as the Packers trounce New Orleans 35-7 in the Louisiana Superdome. The Green Bay quarterback throws 21 passes at defensive coordinator Wade Phillips’ defense with 19 successes in dialing up a completion percentage of 90.5 percent. Dickey also fires five touchdown passes and exits the game early after tossing his fifth TD to receiver John Jefferson with 9:47 remaining in the fourth quarter. “We weren’t picking on anybody,” Jefferson says. “But if you give Lynn time to throw, he’s super and can kill you.” Dickey is not to blame for Green Bay’s two incompletions. Tight end Paul Coffman fails to hang on to a pass prior to getting drilled by safety Frank Wattelet, and running back Terdell Middleton drops a screen pass.
