Dec. 11, 1944 – Packers coach Curly Lambeau puts to rest rumors that his ace receiver, Don Hutson, won’t suit up to play in the championship game. “It’s a lot of baloney. Don Hutson will definitely play Sunday against the New York Giants in the National Professional league football championship game.” That’s what Lambeau tells the Milwaukee Sentinel when reached by phone at his Charlottesville, Virginia hotel. “Don is in A-1 shape and unless some one shoots him, he’ll definitely play Sunday. I just left him in his room and he’s as fit as a fiddle. And that goes for the rest of the squad, including Lou Brock.” Six days later, Hutson catches two passes for 46 yards as Green Bay upends New York 14-7. Brock punts six times and attempts one pass.

His reinjured knee made him mostly a decoy for the Packers, unfortunately. Thank God for Wisconsin-boy Ted Fritsch!
