Rison to the Challenge: Packers Sign Former Jaguars Receiver
Nov. 19, 1996 –Andre Rison is a Packer. Waived by the Jacksonville Jaguars, the wide receiver is claimed by a Green Bay team looking to bolster a banged-up receiving corps. “Green Bay knows Andre as a person,” Rison’s agent, Charles Tucker, says referring to the fact that the Packers courted Rison in free agency a year earlier. “I think he’ll fit in immediately. There’s nothing wrong with his skills. He can still catch it.” With receiver Robert Brooks (knee) out for the season, and receiver Antonio Freeman (broken left forearm) and tight end Mark Chmura (sprained arch) not ready to return, Rison leads the Packers with five catches for 44 yards in a pivotal 24-9 win over the Rams five days later. He also hauls in a 54-yard TD pass from Brett Favre to open the scoring in Green Bay’s 35-21 win over the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI.
