A Starr Shines in Dallas

Oct. 28, 1968 – Vince Lombardi’s Packers went 5-0 against the Dallas Cowboys in games that counted. Phil Bengtson, Lombardi’s top assistant for nine years, wasn’t about to tarnish that record in his first season after taking over for the legend as head coach, even against a 6-0 Cowboys team that had outscored its opponents 213 to 61. Bart Starr fires four touchdown passes – two to tight end Marv Fleming – and the Packers turn four Dallas turnovers into 14 points as they upend the Cowboys 28-17 at the Cotton Bowl. The victory pushes Green Bay (3-3-1) into a tie with the Lions for first place in the Central Division. “It was definitely a must game for us if there ever was one,” Bengtson says. “There’s no question about this being our best game of the whole year.”
