Don Hutson Remains on the Sidelines
Sept. 26, 1946 – Will he or won’t he? As yet another Green Bay Packers season approaches, the question of whether or not Don Hutson will suit up again arises and this time Green Bay coach Curly Lambeau is definitive in his answer. “There isn’t a chance of Don Hutson getting into the game,” Lambeau says in squelching a rumor that the legendary end might come out of retirement. Indeed, three days later Hutson is dressed in hat, coat and tie as he serves as Green Bay’s backfield/ends coach. Unable to work magic from the sidelines as he once did from the field, the gridiron great can only watch as the Packers get routed 30-7 by the Chicago Bears.
