July 23, 1959 – Sensing something new and exciting is afoot, a number of Packers veterans report early, joining dozens of rookies at the first training camp conducted by new coach Vince Lombardi. “Guess they couldn’t wait,” Lombardi says of the unexpected contingent. Defensive tackles Dave Hanner and Jerry Helluin, linebackers Tom Bettis and Dan Currie, ends Max McGee and Gary Knafelc, defensive ends Bill Quinlan and Jim Temp, center Jim Ringo, guard Jerry Kramer, tackle Bob Skoronski, halfback Lew Carpenter and fullback Howie Ferguson report. “Hanner and Helluin look pretty well fed,” Lombardi observes. “But we’ll take care of that. Otherwise, everyone appears to be in good shape.”
