Mark Murphy: Mistaken Identity

Mark Murphy

When someone says Green Bay Packers and Mark Murphy in the same sentence, most people probably think of the team’s current president. Of course, Packers fans know there’s another Mark Murphy — the Packers Hall of Fame safety.

That Murphy played safety for the team from 1980 to 1991. Oddly, team president Murphy played the same position for the Washington Redskins during the same period.

Are you confused yet?

Don’t worry. You’re not alone.

In an interview with Packers.com, former Packers safety Murphy said it happens all the time.

“It’s funny, when he was playing for the Redskins, I’d get his football cards sent to me and his insurance forms,” the former Packer said. “Mark was one of the marquee guys in the NFL. He was a player representative in the NFLPA and the media would call me for quotes and I’d tell them they have the wrong guy. Even now I get his cards and letters, and he gets the same for me. There are some mix-ups.”

You’d think everyone would have this straightened out by now, but confusion reigns.

Imagine if team president Murphy one day joins player Murphy in the Packers Hall of Fame.
